The Chateau D'isenbourg offers charm and comfort...
Bernard Urbain and his team welcome you to the Chateau D' Isenbourg Hotel. Not far from Colmar, the Château d'Isenbourg, a chateau-hotel situated on the Alsace Wine route and overlooking the medieval city of Rouffach.
The existence of the chateau in the Merovingian era is attested in several documents. Rouffach was part of the Austrasian crown lands and the chateau d'Isenbourg was one of the royal residences.
In 1380, Bishop Frédéric de Blankenheim enlarged and doubled the fortified walls of the city, with the object of giving better protection to the town of Rouffach.
The chateau d'Isenbourg was made part of the town' system of defence. The oldest representation of the chateau shows Isenbourg and the town of Rouffach in 1548. The imposing mass of the chateau was dominated by the old keep, the most ancient part, which, according to tradition, was "as hard as iron".
On 7th June 1791, Isenbourg was sold as a national asset. Around 1822, the old superstructure was demolished. The remaining barrel-vaulted cellars, dating from the 13th and 15th centuries are now used as the restaurant, the cellars and the kitchen. |

"Quality"
I suppose you can find a gripe about any hotel or you might just be unlucky and get the worst room in the house or make a bad choice when presented with a foreign menu. This was my second visit to the "Chateau" and I found it excellent again. The first year I ate in the restaurant which was expensive but the difference in price between this excellent restaurant and another quality restaurant is not so much. I had a standard room which this May and last May was offered at 75€. For this you get a reasonable sized room with a view, (I doubt there are any poor views at this place), reasonable furniture and a comfortable bed and the bathroom while not massive is well appointed. There are several well appointed lounges and bars, but best of all a decent indoor swimming pool, sauna and steam room. A gym is advertised but is only a couple of simple pieces of apparatus. An out door pool is available if the weather is good enough. When compared with other hotels in the 50-60€ range I think you get your moneys worth (and I am keen on not spending hard earned cash). You can of course pay a lot more than this for bigger rooms and an al a carte menu.
I was slightly disappointed that the room was smaller this year, but that could be the luck of the draw and I was slightly dissappointed that I was not remembered, but maybe I'm not memorable. The staff were polite and the man I assume is the manager is exceptionally attentive.
